The analysis is ready before she opens the reports.
An agent has collected the figures, compared the sources, and prepared the morning’s work. The data is aggregated. Some of it is old. The preparation no longer requires her.
The live connection is still on the roadmap.
There are reasons. Permissions. Conflicting definitions. Systems that have spent years disagreeing without anyone forcing the disagreement into the open.
The central team is doing necessary work.
So is she.
She was told to learn AI. Find efficiencies. Experiment.
She did.
A recurring task became a scheduled agent. Instructions accumulated around it. Context stopped having to be supplied every morning. Exceptions acquired rules.
Then she built another.
Her role description sits in the local runtime alongside the agents now carrying out parts of it.
A colleague packages a similar approach into a plugin. Someone else adapts it. The method travels faster than the infrastructure it was supposed to wait for.
The reports remain imperfect. Fetching them has become cheap. For decisions made once a week, missing live data has lost some of its authority as an excuse.
She would still like the connection.
She has stopped waiting for it.
The adjustments continue between calls. Corrections after something fails. Decisions too small to document separately, now buried inside instructions she trusts because she remembers what happened without them.
The organization still calls this experimentation.
Her job now depends on it.
The system does more of the work. She takes the results to meetings.
There are more meetings now.
A year later, the live data launches.
On screen, an agent traces a discrepancy through connected sources. Current figures. Shared definitions. No exports to reconcile.
She has spent a year working around the missing connections.
The project team has earned the applause.
She applauds.
Then she tries to establish how much of her working environment survives the achievement.
A familiar metric has a new definition. Her comparisons, instructions, and automated commentary still contain the previous one.
The new definition does not tell her which of last year’s conclusions still hold.
Someone has to find everywhere it went.
The new connections are available inside the approved platform.
Her existing agents cannot use them.
She has a morning that works and back-to-back meetings for the foreseeable future.
Before she can migrate, she has to recover a year of decisions made between other things. Work out which still apply. Rebuild the routines. Find out what breaks.
The time her system saved is already booked.
The migration plan calls her a user.
It has work for her.
Leadership asked for experimentation and received working systems. It asked for productivity and filled the released hours.
Now it needs those hours back.
Weeks later, her agents are still running.
On the adoption dashboard, she has yet to begin.
